I am a U2 fan and I live as far as one can ever get to the awesome rock gods--the Philippines. Here, we don't get to see them live, we don't get to attend their book signings, we don't get to see them drive around the streets shooting a music video. Life sucks.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my country--- the beach, the sun, the people, the hilarious (intentionally or not) politicians—but I just hate the fact that I, and the other fans living on my side of the globe, always seem be left out of the U2 loop. Sure we get to hear news about them, but that’s all we ever really get to do.
When I wanted to get a copy of U2’s U2 by U2 book, I had to BEG and bribe my uncle who’s studying in the States (by the way, thanks Kuya Ral) to send me a copy, then wait for two months before I finally got to touch the book’s super-smooth pages. Two agonizing months, 9 weeks, 60-plus days—all because none of the book stores in the country sold the book.
Want to know the closest thing I've come to seeing U2 in c oncert? A few months back, NU 107.5 (the home of NU rock), the only radio station in the Philippines worth listening to, had a special screening of U2’s Milan concert at a theatre here. Yes, while other people get to see U2 perform gloriously two, three consecutive nights, I had to make do with watching them in a theatre screening (the tickets of which, by the way, I had to really work hard for to win). To quote Father Jack of the genious show, Father Ted, “Feck!”
Am I holding the U2 management at fault for not having a concert here or at least, somewhere accessible to me? No. Is this a call to arms to all Filipino and Southeast Asian U2 fans to start making noise and ask Bono, Adam, the Edge and (the ever-gorgeous) Larry to hold a concert here? Yes. Is someone going to get hurt? Just my fingers and eyes.
This blog, is about my frustrations about being unable to have the “U2 experience” just because I am in the Philippines. This blog is a petition calling U2 to hold a concert here. This blog is for every other Filipino U2 fan feeling the same deprivation and longing as I am. This blog is about U2.
